Chapter History
HAMPTON - NEWPORT NEWS (VA) ALUMNI CHAPTER
Kappa Alpha Psi, Inc.
The Hampton Alumni Chapter was the second chapter to be chartered by Kappa
Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. in Tidewater. On August 4, 1945, 17 Peninsula
Kappas proudly accepted a charter from Province Polemarch W. Henry Green
and Laurel Wreath Holder Judge Ammond W. Scott. The ceremony took place
in the clubroom of the Newsome Park Rental Office in Newport News, where
William R. Walker, Jr., the chapter's first Keeper of Exchequer, was manager.
For much of its early history, the chapter held its meetings
in Newport News, VA and its membership was consistently comprised of Kappa
men from both Hampton and Newport News. In light of this, in September
1979, the Grand Board of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. redesignated
the chapter as the "Hampton-Newport News Alumni Chapter." This
name change was consistent with the membership’s demographic makeup
ensuring a unified Kappa existence on the Peninsula.
Since the Chapters inception, members have labored to promote
the well being of the community, as well as its fundamental purpose of
the Fraternity – Achievement. Our Guide Right Program focuses on
preparing young men for leadership. We strive to inspire high school age
men to achieve academically and introduce them to varied professions.
We sponsor activities and programs that will expose and introduce young
men to varied positive social and community settings.
One of our most successful programs has been the awarding
of scholarships to assist graduating youths to attend college. The basis
of these awards is not just for their academic achievements but also for
their demonstrated potential in leadership and community service.
The chapter's 62-year history has been replete with
organizational and individual achievements. From its infancy to the present
time, it has remained fervently true to the creed and objectives of Kappa
Alpha Psi Fraternity and has worked to promote the welfare of humanity.
